Barriers to Reform - MPs' Motives

This page deals with MPs motives for obstructing fundamental democratic reforms.

New Labour has introduced many reforms, and under Gordon Brown wants to be seen to be introducing radical reform. Proposals fall short of the rhetoric. Politicians seem to be genuinely worried about the lack of popular engagement in the formal political process, and about their public image. They don't want to surrender power to the people however, and their offerings attract the contempt they deserve.
