Global Context - Britain in the World

The purpose of this section is to show how a more democratic system would enable Britain to deal better with global issues.

Britain is densely populated, has limited natural resources, and - as a legacy of Empire - has become dependent on cheap imports. She has for a long time been regarded as a trading nation, and now runs deficits on her trade in goods and services accounts. She only achieves a balance of payments through income on investments abroad. This has to change if we are to survive, as we were warned in the 1970s in 'A Blueprint for Survival'.
