The Local Dimension - Summary

Before we can expect to win popular support for democratic reforms, we have to acknowledge the depth of cynicism about formal politics, and the rise of single issue politics, especially at a local level. Such activity can take one of two forms:

  • Reaction against the consequences of an especially bad government decision, inappropriate development etc., or
  • A positive attempt to work towards sustainability, following the adage: 'Think Globally; Act Locally'.

A development that has the potential to assist local initiatives is the Sustainable Communities Act 2007 (see page below). It is inevitable that it will not meet all aspirations.

We conclude that, although local initiatives will achieve limited goals, much frustration will result. this must be used to generate popular demand for reform.
